About the Program

About Bike&Build:
Through service-oriented cycling trips, Bike & Build benefits affordable housing and empowers young adults for a lifetime of service and civic engagement. Since being founded as an independent 501(c)3 organization in 2002, Bike & Build has engaged over 1,250 riders and has donated more than $2.7MM and 80,000 hours to affordable housing groups throughout the country
This summer I will be riding from Portland ME to Santa Barbara CA. Our 71 day, 3842 mile (6183km) itinerary includes 12 build days, and 3 days off. In the months proceeding I must donate at least 10 hours of labor to a local affordable housing build project, train extensively, and raise $4000.
Where do the funds go?
Proceeds raised are distributed through four methods:
En-Route Donations: Bike & Build financially supports housing groups in the communities we visit.
Competitive Grants: Riders on each trip will receive grant applications and award funding through a team-based competitive selection process.
Individual Rider Grants: Each rider can allocate a portion of their fundraising to an affordable housing organization of their choice.
Pre-Arranged Donations: Bike&Build will make pre-determined contributions to fund projects executed by the groups we work with to produce our events.
